Pumpkin pie is everyone’s fall favorite recipe. Nothing surmises fall more than pumpkin-flavored foods, be it pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pie, or the pumpkins you carve at Halloween. Out of all of them, though, pumpkin pie is perhaps the best. It’s the epitome of the fall season, right down to the burnt orange coloration.

Many of us have a family recipe for pumpkin pie that we stick to religiously. However, there is one way to make any classic pumpkin pie recipe better, and that’s adding cannabis.

Turn your pumpkin pie recipe into a cannabis variant by using cannabutter in the ingredients. It’s a really simple process, but we will guide you through it. Keep reading to discover the best strains to use in cannabutter for pumpkin pie, and how to bake the dessert to perfection.

Cannabis Pumpkin Pie Recipe: The Ingredients You’ll Need

Any pumpkin pie recipe needs the following essentials:

  • Pumpkin
  • Nutmeg
  • Shortcrust pastry

These are the three principal components that will make up the pumpkin pie. The pumpkin and nutmeg lend those beautiful fall flavors we all love, while the pastry makes up the base of the pie. Of course, there are plenty of other ingredients you’ll need to make it all come together. These include:

  • Eggs
  • Flour
  • Granulated sugar
  • Butter

In our pumpkin pie recipe, the butter of course will be getting a big twist. You need to make cannabutter, infusing it with all the beneficial cannabinoids of your favorite marijuana or hemp strain. When this is added to the pumpkin pie, it infuses the entire dessert with cannabis goodness.

Making Cannabutter

So, how do you make cannabutter? The process is pretty easy. First, take your favorite cannabis strain and decarboxylate it.

To do this, preheat your oven to 225˚F. While the oven warms up, grind up your weed into a coarse powder using a hand grinder. Then, spread out the grinds on a sheet of aluminium foil on a baking sheet and place it in the oven. Wait for around 30-45 minutes, and then remove the cannabis from the oven and allow it to cool. It should look a little toasted.

During this process, the cannabinoids within the plant matter activate, converting from acidic form to their regular form. (For example, CBDa becomes CBD).

Now, you’re ready to make cannabutter. Grab your ingredients and equipment. You will need:

  • Butter
  • Water
  • A large saucepan, crockpot, or slow cooker
  • Stirring instrument
  • Cheesecloth
  • Jar or container

Add the butter to the pan with water. To make one cup of cannabutter, you’ll need one cup of butter and one cup of water. Add them both to the pan at the same time on a low heat and allow the butter to melt. The purpose of the water is to keep the butter from burning.

Once the butter is melted, add in the decarboxylated cannabis. Stir it in, then allow the cannabutter mixture to simmer for 2-3 hours over a low heat. Stir it occasionally and keep checking on it to ensure it is neither burning nor boiling; if it boils at any point, then it’s too hot!

At the end, allow the mixture to cool slightly, then strain it through a cheesecloth and into a container. Don’t squeeze the cheesecloth as some plant matter might seep through.

Finally, refrigerate the butter until it hardens. You can drain the water out when it’s ready. Then, store the butter in the fridge until you’re ready to use it. We recommend preparing cannabutter in advance, so it’s ready to go whenever you want to make an edible.

Best Strains for Cannabis Pumpkin Pie

Now comes the killer question: what strain should you use for this recipe?

You need to plan this in advance before making your cannabutter. Luckily, there are several strains that provide a sweet flavor that pairs perfectly with pumpkin pie, but it will also work in other dessert recipes.

The trick is finding a sweet cannabis strain that doesn’t reek of fruit. For example a strain like Strawberry Cough is delicious, but you probably don’t want your pumpkin pie to have a strawberry tinge to it!

There are plenty of sweet strains out there that match cakey desserts quite well, so you’re in luck. Here are WayofLeaf’s top three picks for delicious strains to use in your DIY pumpkin pie cannabis recipe:

CBD Kush

This rare high-CBD strain is a member of the Kush family. It carries some pretty traditional kush flavors thanks to its family genetics, but it also has a delicious sugary flavor that will satisfy sugar cravings. This tastiness comes from its parent strain, Kandy Kush – another good pick for sweet edibles.

Another reason we love CBD Kush is because it’s pretty low in THC. In fact, it has a CBD-to-THC ratio of 4:1. With a large quantity of CBD, you can experience some cannabis benefits without the high!

Infusing a pumpkin pie with CBD Kush is the ideal way to enjoy a sweet cannabis edible, without fear of getting too high and ending up stoned all afternoon.

Pumpkin Kush

This strain just had to be on our list. Royal Queen Seeds released this pumpkin-flavored strain as a holiday hit, and it’s supposed to taste just like pumpkin pie! As a result, it’s probably the best strain to use for a pumpkin pie cannabutter.

The breeders developed Pumpkin Kush partially from Lambsbread, a popular Jamaican strain. Pumpkin Kush has 60% sativa genetics, so it will uplift you and leave you feeling happy and soothed. Some people use this strain before the gym – that’s how powerful the rush of energy is. As a result, it’s best avoided if you like a slice of pumpkin pie before bedtime.

The THC content is 20%, which is quite high even in this day and age. Exercise caution, and make sure you use the amount that’s appropriate for your experience and tolerance level.

Sugar Cookie

The final option for your DIY cannabis pumpkin pie recipe is an indica-dominant hybrid. This strain is a three-way cross between Crystal Gayle, Blue Hawaiian, and Sensi Star. It has some tropical and fruity flavors, which might add a “unique” flavor profile to your pumpkin pie. That said, it’s a good all-around sweet strain for other desserts, and it won’t taste too bad in any pastry.

Given its indica genetics, Sugar Cookie may make you feel relaxed and happy, but also a little sleepy. This one is better for evening use when you don’t mind dozing off. There’s a THC content of 21%, so exercise caution when using.

Variations on the Marijuana Pumpkin Pie Recipe

It’s worth pointing out there’s more than one way to make this recipe. You can make a big ol’ pumpkin pie to slice up and eat as and when you please. However, for any gatherings you’ve got planned, you can also make mini pumpkin pies!

To make mini marijuana pumpkin pies, simply divide the pastry dough into smaller portions. Purchase some small pie dishes and press the pastry crust into each one. Fill them in the same way and put them into the oven to bake for a shorter time length. To make four mini pies that are a quarter of the size of the big pie, they will need about 15 minutes at full temperature, then ~25 minutes at 350˚F.

You can also decorate the pumpkin pie however you want, so don’t be afraid to get imaginative!

Instructions

  1. Add the pumpkin to a large saucepan, cover it with water, then bring it to a boil. Add a lid to the saucepan and simmer for 15 mins until the pumpkin chunks are tender. Then, drain it and allow it to cool, setting aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350˚F.
  3. Lightly flour your work surface with as much as you need, then roll out the pastry. Then, press it into the pie tin. Chill the base in the fridge for 15 minutes, then line it with parchment paper and baking beans, if you have them. Bake the pie crust for 15 minutes, then take away the paper (and beans) and bake again for 10 mins until the pastry is golden and biscuity.
  4. Increase the heat of the oven to 430˚F.
  5. Push the pumpkin chunks through a sieve into a large bowl to make pumpkin puree.
  6. In a separate, large mixing bowl, add the sugar, salt, nutmeg, and half the cinnamon. Beat the eggs and mix them in, along with the melted cannabutter and milk. Finally, add the pumpkin puree and stir it to combine.
  7. Pour this mixture into the pie base and cook it in the oven for 10 mins. Reduce the temperature again to 350˚F, and bake for 40 mins until the filling has set.
  8. Allow the pie to cool, then dust it with icing sugar and the remaining cinnamon.
