Lynn Hondred and Nicole Smith co-founded Mary’s Medicinals in 2013. It’s a Colorado-based company created after Smith’s friends in the cannabis industry asked her what she would do if she operated in the sector. Smith said she would sell transdermal patches. Her friends said she couldn’t do it, so Smith and Hondred set out to prove them wrong!

The patch Mary’s Medicinals created in 2013 was apparently the world’s first cannabis transdermal patch. The brand uses cannabis extract in its products, so they aren’t available in every state. You require a medical marijuana card to purchase these products unless you live in a state where the plant is recreationally legal. Mary’s Medicinals is a brand name on the rise, and it has won several awards, including the 2014 Invention of the Year at the prestigious Cannabis Business Awards. The company also won Best New Product at the High Times Cannabis Cup.

It performs in-house testing on raw materials, extracts, and final products. It also works with third-party labs to validate the quality of what it sells. However, the official website offers little information on the extraction method used. After a little digging, we uncovered an interview with Nicole Smith where she confirms that the brand uses ethanol extraction. She also spoke of a partnership with Elite Botanicals, which is growing cannabis sativa plants in Colorado with a THC content of below 0.3%. Mary’s Medicinals uses these plants to create its CBD products.

Now that we’ve introduced the brand, it is time to see what it offers.

Mary’s Medicinals CBD Oil Review

If you’ve never visited the Mary’s Medicinals website before, you might get a little confused when searching for the CBD tincture. Indeed, we did a double-take when analyzing the brand for our Mary’s Medicinals CBD oil review.

It turns out that the company places its oil in the ‘Consumable’ category. Its main offering is called ‘The Remedy.’ There are only two CBD oil concentrations: 500mg and 1000mg. Each bottle contains half an ounce, and Mary’s Medicinals says there are 54 servings in each container. The smaller concentration offers 2mg of CBD per drop, while the larger one provides 4mg per drop.

Unlike many brands, Mary’s Medicinals provides an estimated onset time (15 minutes) and duration (3-5 hours). It is an unusual yet pleasant tasting oil that contains:

Is There Another Mary’s Medicinals CBD Tincture?

Yes! Mary’s Medicinals CBD range also includes a product called ‘FORMULA Sublingual Oil 4:4:2:1:1. This is the ratio of CBD, CBG, CBN, THC, and THCa it contains. There is a total of 600mg of cannabinoids in the bottle, divided as follows:

As you can see, approximately one-third of the tincture consists of CBD. There is 13.5ml of liquid, and there’s a possibility that it causes mild intoxication. Apart from the cannabis extract, FORMULA contains blood orange and elderberry flavoring, along with safflower oil. There is also a significant number of terpenes.

Mary’s Medicinals’ transdermal products deliver the cannabinoids directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the first-pass metabolism by the liver. As the compounds also avoid being broken down by stomach acids, you benefit from a higher level of bioavailability.

The company’s 2” x 2” transdermal patches are award-winning innovations. All you have to do is apply a patch to any ‘venous part of the skin,’ and it is effective for the entire day or night. There is a patch that contains nothing but 20mg of CBD.

According to the brand, most users feel the effects within 15-30 minutes, and you may experience benefits for up to 12 hours. The patch contains cannabis extract, naturally derived terpenes, and eucalyptus. Mary’s Medicinals also sells patches with the following cannabinoids:

Our Mary’s Medicinals transdermal gel pen review focuses on the CBD version. You can use it as an accompaniment to the patches and is designed for patients looking to manage breakthrough symptoms. To apply, place the gel on your skin and rub it in for relief.

According to the brand, the pen is “one of the fastest-acting, most accurately dosed cannabis products available.” Initially, it contained just 100mg of CBD, but Mary’s Medicinals have increased it to 200mg. It says there are 50 x 4mg doses in each pen, and it has an onset time of 5-15 minutes. The brand claims the product is effective for up to six hours.

The list of ingredients is short: The pen contains nothing but cannabis extract, naturally derived terpenes and a transdermal gel base. Make sure you clean and dry your skin before using the pen. Twist the end to unlock and depress to dispense a carefully measured 4mg dose.

Although the brand seems to have a limited number of categories, it does sell quite a few products. Its CBD and CBN capsules come in a 5-pack or a 30-pack, with each pill containing 10mg of the chosen cannabinoids. Apart from the cannabis extract and terpenes, the capsules contain powdered cellulose and are vegan-friendly.

Mary’s Medicinals’ Muscle Freeze is extremely popular and comes in a 1.5oz tub with 150mg of CBD and a 3oz tub with 300mg of CBD. Mary’s Medicinal claims that the product works almost immediately, and customer reviews seem to back up this assertion. The cooling sensation is due to the presence of menthol. In the topicals section, there is also a FORMULA compound and a FORMULA transdermal patch.

There is one other transdermal product; a transdermal compound, a cream you rub into the skin. Choose between the 1:1 CBD to THC ratio or the 10:1 CBD to THC ratio.

In most of our reviews, we recommend purchasing products from a brand’s official site. However, in this instance, it is impossible to buy Mary’s Medicinals products online. Instead, you can only make a purchase via a licensed dispensary in states where medical or recreational cannabis is legal.

You can find the company’s full range of products if you live in states such as Colorado, Arizona, California, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. Check the ‘Store Locator’ tab on the website to see if a dispensary near you sells Mary’s Medicinals products.

The site suggests that you call ahead to confirm that a specific product is available before you buy. You can also use sites like Get Nugg to see if any local dispensaries can deliver the product. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, ask one of the company’s managers to order it for you.

Final Thoughts on Mary’s Medicinals

We are not completely sure that transdermal products are up to 10 times more effective than other forms of ingestion. However, there’s no doubt that Mary’s Medicinals offers a wide range of top-notch CBD and THC products to help various issues throughout the body and mind.

One slight downside is that our skin is not a 100% effective barrier, so the patches have a relaxant that leaves your skin vulnerable to external toxins. Just make sure that your skin is clean before wearing a patch. A good idea is to use alcohol to clean it before applying the patch.

Unfortunately, you can only purchase Mary’s Medicinal products in certain states. This is a shame, but the company has chosen to use cannabis extract instead of hemp. While hemp is now federally legal, marijuana is not. Please check your state’s laws before buying any product from this company.
