Even if you’re not a bath person, there’s no denying that an hour to yourself soaking in a luxury tub of warm bubbles is a great way to unwind.

If you are a fan of bath time, then a new trend in the CBD industry will be right up your alley. CBD bath bombs boast a wealth of relaxing and beneficial properties, and they’re also incredibly aromatherapeutic.

But what exactly is a CBD bath bomb? Should you bother spending your hard-earned money on one, or are bath bombs just another CBD fad? Let’s find out.

How Can CBD Benefit Us?

Cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD, is one of the two most well-known cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not induce that famous high so commonly associated with smoking weed; it is non-intoxicating.

There are hundreds of studies into CBD and how it works with our body to reduce pain and inflammation. From research, we know that CBD has excellent potential anti-inflammatory, neuroprotectant, and anti-anxiety potential.

When consumed, CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short. The ECS works to regulate a wide range of vital bodily functions and keeps things such as our body temperature, appetite, and even the way we feel pain in check.

What Is a CBD Bath Bomb?

A CBD bath bomb is a ball-shaped product containing cannabidiol and aromatic essential oils, terpenes, and other ingredients designed to dissolve in bathwater. It produces an immense amount of suds and color and fills your bathroom with a beautiful fragrance.

These days, you’ll find companies marketing CBD bath bombs for just about anything. Back pain, sleepless nights, sensitive skin, oily skin, acne, etc. If it’s an ailment, there’s probably a bath bomb for it!

You probably know that CBD comes in many forms, the most popular being CBD oil. One consumes CBD oil orally by placing it under the tongue and then waiting a few seconds before swallowing.

Besides oils, there are CBD capsules, CBD vape oils, and even topical CBD products. Although CBD oils work fast and can benefit the entire body, many prefer topicals as you can apply them to specific areas. Topicals can help ease sore muscles, improve skin health, and offer anti-inflammatory benefits.

The infusion of essential oils offers supplementary benefits that other topicals don’t provide. However, as with most CBD products, bath bombs aren’t cheap. So is it worth buying a CBD bath bomb? Do they really offer that much more than a simple bubble bath?

What Is a THC Bath Bomb?

Some brands sell bath bombs that contain both CBD and THC. You may see these products listed as a cannabis bath bomb, CBD bath bomb (with THC), or a THC bath bomb.

These products contain an equal amount of THC and CBD in most cases. For example, Kush Queen offers a bath bomb with a 1:1 ratio of delta 8 THC to CBD, i.e., 25mg of delta 8: 25mg of CBD.

Bath bombs that contain a combination of cannabinoids, terpenes, and essential oils may offer additional benefits.

Theoretically, bath bombs that contain a combination of these cannabinoids, plus various terpenes and essential oils, may offer additional benefits than one that just contains CBD. Some of these purported benefits include pain relief, stress reduction, and muscle relaxation.

Let’s take a closer look at some CBD bath bomb benefits.

CBD Bath Bomb Benefits

There is a lot to be said for the mental and physical benefits of a nice bath. Not only are you getting the benefit of taking some time out from the daily grind to soak in a pool of steam and bubbles, but you are also (most likely) benefitting from the essential oils that most bath products contain.

Interestingly in 2017, a group of researchers at Loughborough University looked into the benefits of taking a hot bath compared to the health benefits associated with exercise. The study looked at fourteen men, with half being subjected to an hour-long bike ride and the other an hour-long soak in a hot bath.

The study compared the calories burned in both groups. The researchers also monitored the participant’s blood sugar level for 24 hours after the trial ended. This is what the results revealed:

  • Those who cycled burned more calories than those who had a bath. However, those who bathed burned the equivalent calories to a 30-minute walk!
  • Results showed that peak blood sugar levels were 10% lower after eating in those who had bathed compared to those who had cycled.

And perhaps most interestingly, the study looked at changes to the inflammatory response similar to that following exercise. The study suggested that repeated passive heat might contribute to reducing chronic inflammation.

What does this all mean?

So, what does this mean for CBD bath bombs? Given the small-scale study we just looked at, maybe a hot bath is enough to do the job? Well, as an effective topical, CBD could potentially improve the anti-inflammatory and stress-relieving effects associated with bath time!

There are numerous anecdotal reports on the topic, but the consensus seems to be that CBD bath bombs are a great addition to the tub if you are looking for a way to unwind and fall asleep with ease. As far as research goes, there isn’t any that we know of just yet as it is still very early days for the CBD bath bomb.

We know that the vast majority of brands selling these CBD bath bombs offer luxury lavender, honey, essential oil-infused bombs. Therefore you can enjoy both the CBD bath bomb benefits and those provided by the essential oils and other ingredients.

We also know that CBD does have the potential to soothe inflamed muscles, reduce anxiety, and offer a sedative effect that will see you drifting off in no time, so we say if you’re willing to pay the price – why the hell not?! Ultimately, deciding whether or not you want to give the CBD bath bomb a shot is a personal choice. But as with many things in the world of health and wellness, it might be worth a try simply so that you can rule out whether or not the product works for you.

Do CBD Bath Bombs Work?

At the end of the day, what people want to know is, do CBD bath bombs work? Unfortunately, the evidence for whether CBD bath bombs work is entirely anecdotal, as there is no empirical evidence to demonstrate their efficacy. That said, based on numerous CBD bath bomb product reviews, many people swear by them.

What is clear is that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are well-known. Also, there are many CBD-infused topical products, such as creams and ointments, that when applied directly to the skin, reportedly provide pain relief. Furthermore, there is empirical evidence that demonstrates the anti-inflammatory properties of transdermally absorbed CBD.

There is anecdotal evidence that CBD bath bombs work, but whether they’ll work for you is not guaranteed.

One animal study suggested that the transdermal application of a CBD gel for four consecutive days “significantly reduced joint swelling” in rodent models with induced arthritis. While this study shows that the transdermal absorption of CBD can have an anti-inflammatory effect, whether or not CBD can be absorbed by the skin when dissolved in bathwater is another matter.

Again, there is anecdotal evidence that CBD bath bombs work, but whether they’ll work for you is not guaranteed. The only way you’ll know for sure is by trying them.

Are CBD Bath Bombs Safe?

Apart from wondering, do CBD bath bombs work, another important question is, are CBD bath bombs safe?

Well, one major CBD brand that offers CBD bath bombs, states on their website, that pregnant women should consult with a doctor before use, and to stop using them if you experience an allergic reaction.

Also, take note of other ingredients in the bath bomb since some may cause skin irritation. It’s not necessarily the CBD you have to worry about.

More practical advice is also given, such as keeping the product away from children and to be careful getting in and out of the bath when using the product as it can make the tub slippery.
