If you make regular trips to the dispensary, then you know that it can start to become very costly. A careful examination of your finances could reveal that a significant portion of your budget is literally going up in smoke!
This article will show you some savvy ways to save money at your local dispensary. We will discuss different cost-saving measures you can undertake to help you buy high-quality weed at a discount price.
1) Split Up Quantities
Most of us have our favorite strains. We go to our local dispensary and almost on auto-pilot reach for the same strain every time. One problem with consuming the same strain repeatedly is that over time, your body builds up a tolerance to its effects.
With so many different types of strains out there to choose from, it seems foolish to stick with just one. Who knows, your perfect strain just might be available at your local dispensary? But because you haven’t branched out, you haven’t discovered it – yet.
This is where splitting up quantities can help you both save money, and possibly help you find your dream strain. Check with your dispensary or other dispensaries in your area, if they allow customers to split up quantities.
What this essentially means, is that rather than buying an ounce of one strain, you could buy four quarters (of an ounce), instead. If your dispensary allows it, then you could try four quarters of four different strains. As regular cannabis consumers will know, the cost of a quarter varies significantly from strain to strain. A quarter of a low-end strain typically costs approximately $20. However, a quarter of a high-end strain could cost you upwards of $50. By splitting up quantities in this way, you get to save money while trying out new strains.
2) Use Coupons
This industry is big on coupons, and if you know where to look, you can make significant savings. The best way to go about this is to check your local dispensary’s website. On certain days some dispensaries offer better deals than others.
Be warned, though; not all dispensaries accept coupons. However, many do and they are a great way to buy high-quality weed at a discount price. It is highly advisable to call ahead and ask the manager whether they accept coupons at their dispensary or not.
Calling ahead will save you both time and gas money on any wasted trips to these dispensaries.
Also, be mindful that some coupons you find online could be fake. Be sure to confirm the authenticity of any coupons you’ve found online when speaking to the budtender on the phone.
3) Bulk Purchasing
You probably do the same thing every couple of days. You go to your local dispensary and pick up a few grams or ounces, depending on your budget. A couple of days later, you’ve run out, and you have to head out to your local dispensary again.
While this may seem like a necessary evil, you are probably not taking into consideration the additional costs involved. Hidden costs such as time and gas money rarely get factored in by consumers when calculating how much they spend on weed.
A more prudent and cost-effective way to purchase marijuana is to buy it in bulk. As you are purchasing more in one transaction, you could even ask for a discount. Many dispensaries will give you a nice 5%-10% discount, depending on the amount of weed you purchase. If you are a regular customer and begin to buy in bulk, your budtender is more likely to give you a discount. When you factor in the discount, your overall cost per ounce goes down.
One con of buying in bulk is that you have to pay more for a single transaction. Still, though, you will save money in the long run. By avoiding additional trips to the local dispensary, you also save on gas money and time, too.
4) Grow it
Rather than buying your favorite flower at your local dispensary, why not purchase some cannabis seeds instead? This way, you can grow your weed at home. By growing your own weed, you could potentially make significant savings.
Some cannabis strains only require basic growing knowledge and skills. Check out the ‘Growing’ section of our website, where you will find lots of practical tips and step-by-step grow guides. There are also hundreds of books online, so there is lots of information available on the subject out there.
However, before you embark on your growing project, you will need to do some basic research and budgeting. Firstly, you need to find out whether or not it is legal to grow marijuana in your state. Some states have stringent laws regarding cultivating cannabis for personal use at home. For example, in Arizona, you are only legally permitted to grow up to 12 plants at home for personal use. Also, you are only allowed to do so if you live more than 25 miles from a dispensary. Other states, such as West Virginia, do not permit marijuana cultivation for any purpose.
If cannabis cultivation is legal in your state, then you will need to budget for some additional costs. You will have to factor in the overall cost of growing cannabis at home. Some of these costs include heating and lighting, purchasing nutrients for feeding the plants, etc.
You will also have to think about how time-consuming caring for cannabis plants will be. Therefore, you will need to factor in the opportunity cost of devoting your time to home cannabis cultivation. Initially, it’s a good idea to research some low maintenance strains to grow, as these will take up less of your valuable time.
Growing cannabis at home is not a viable option for everyone. For others, though, it could work out to be very cost-effective in the long run.
5) Shop Around
Every so often, it’s best to shop around and see what other dispensaries have to offer. You’ll often find that they are selling the same product at a cheaper rate. Bear in mind that all dispensaries are competing with each other for market share. If you find another dispensary that is selling your favorite strain for less, then tell your budtender. They will likely match the price so that you purchase from them instead.
If you live close to several different dispensaries, then you’ve more chance of finding a better deal.
While you could visit each dispensary individually, it makes more sense to do your research online or over the phone. This way, you are saving on gas money, as well as time.
If you do call ahead, then be sure to ask lots of questions. Ask them about current or upcoming offers, if they have a loyalty program in place, or if they price match. The more information you can glean, the more informed and cost-effective your purchase making decisions will be.
6) Invest in a Medical Marijuana Card
If you are consuming marijuana to alleviate the symptoms of a medical condition, then you should seriously consider investing in a medical marijuana (MMJ) card. Currently, medical marijuana is legal in 33 states and Washington, D.C.
If you live in one of the states (or Washington D.C) which has a medical marijuana program, then you may be eligible for one. To qualify for a MMJ card, you need to be diagnosed with a qualifying condition. The simplest way to find out whether you are eligible or not is to discuss this with your doctor. However, you can begin your research online. Check out the ‘Medical Cards’ section of our website for more information and state-by-state guides on how to obtain one.
While a MMJ card will cost you money in terms of an upfront fee, it will save you money over the long run. Generally, the price of and sales taxes on marijuana are lower for medical patients than for recreational users.
In Colorado, for example, taxes on medical marijuana are 25% lower than retail marijuana! However, there are always exceptions to every rule. In Nevada, the cost of a MMJ card is a whopping $175. As Nevada applies a low tax rate on marijuana, the high cost of the MMJ card wipes out any potential savings.
Depending on the state you live in, however, most MMJ cardholders should make significant savings at their local dispensary.
