Nick Denney is a greenhouse and hydroponics specialist with experience in growing both vegetables and cannabis on a commercial scale. Nick is also skilled in fertilizer and water management, integrated pest management, crop physiology, and controlled environment agriculture.
Nick has a Masters Degree in Agronomy with a focus in Agroecology from the University of Florida. He currently works as a Cultivation Manager at Holistic Industries – a large-scale cannabis cultivation facility on the east coast.
The Holistic Industries mission is to provide patients with the safest, highest-quality cannabis medicine possible. The company develops and offers an array of proprietary strains that increase sought-out cannabinoids such as CBD.
Outside of his professional career, Nick loves spending time with his family and friends. He currently resides in Virginia with his wife Vanessa and their dog Chili. The couple relocated from Florida in January 2018 to pursue their career dreams; Nick in cannabis and Vanessa in environmental conservation.
In their downtime, the couple enjoys taking Chili on walks to the dog park so he can socialize with all of his furry friends.
Nick attended the University of Florida between 2009 to 2013, and again from 2015 to 2017. He obtained his B.S. in Economics in 2013 and his M.S. (Masters Degree) in Agronomy from the University of Florida in 2017.
His licenses and certifications include the following:
- OSHA-30 General Industry from the OSHA Education Center which he received in February 2019
- Maryland Private Pesticide Applicator Certificate from the Maryland Department of Agriculture received in November 2018
- First Aid qualification from American Red Cross received in March 2019
- Maryland Certified Nutrient Management Operator certificate received from the Maryland Department of Agriculture received in August 2019
Nick began his career working as a Farm Associate at Orchard Pond Organics. This is a multi-acre certified organic vegetable farm in Florida. He worked here between January and May 2013. He then took a job at Organic Nutrition Industries, where he worked as a Greenhouse Manager.
He was responsible for managing the hydroponic vegetable greenhouse and shade house production at Organic Nutrition. His main tasks here included developing sustainable food and alternative protein production methods for a commercial agribusiness model by integrating hydroponics, aquaculture, and entomology.
During his time here, Nick pursued and completed his Masters of Science in Agronomy with a concentration in Agroecology from the University of Florida. As part of his studies here, he conducted research that assessed the potential to increase BRIX% in pea shoots via nutrient-induced salinity.
His focus in Agroecology greatly improved his understanding of incorporating environmentally friendly methods into traditional production systems and how they relate to crop performance.
2013 was a big year for Nick. He also co-founded Natural Nomad Farms, a specialty produce farm located in Boynton Beach, FL. The farm was a highly specialized vegetable farm tasked with growing unique varieties using sustainable and intensive production methods. The focus was on growing unique, high-end produce items that were marketed to high-end chefs in South Florida, including Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, José Andrés.
Through their partnerships with local restaurants and their impressive online market presence by becoming the top seller of buzz buttons (Acmella oleracea) on both Amazon and Etsy, the farm quickly gained notoriety.
Earlier this year, Nick made the decision to sell his equity in Natural Nomad Farms to shift the focus of his career to cannabis entirely. Nick first began his career at Holistic Industries in January 2018 where he was employed as Assistant Cultivation Manager. In March 2019 he was promoted to Cultivation Manager.
Now, as a cannabis Cultivation Manager, Nick is responsible for overseeing the cultivation department at the facility to ensure that the cannabis grown here is of the safest and highest quality possible. He brought over the fundamentals of production from the Greenhouse vegetable industry and has applied it to the commercial production of cannabis to improve efficiencies.
He has stated that his favorite part of the job is the people he works with and pheno-hunting for special cultivars.
Skills and Interests
Nick has extensive experience with many different styles of production. These include deep water culture, ebb and flow, NFT, and drip irrigation.
He also has experience using different types of growing media, including peat moss, organic soil, rock wool, coco noir, and perlite. One of his main areas of expertise is fertigation and nutrient management.
Along with hydroponics, Nick’s career has been focused on growing in controlled environments. He has experience in growing indoors, outdoors, and in greenhouses and is thus well-versed in the challenges that may present themselves in each of these situations.
His main focus now is cannabis, and this is where his expertise is used to achieve the best possible crops possible.
